One Day at a Time

ONE DAY AT A TIME

I'm an artist with big dreams of creating beautiful projects. Yet I often wonder why bother to push myself to create “hands-on” artworks, when after they’re done, they’ll simply reside in a box, or on a shelf? I have no outlet for such things -- no one but me would be likely to see them. And I have the ability to see so many creative images in my mind's eye. Maybe just thinking about artworks would be good enough? No, that isn’t good enough! But sometimes I have to settle for that. Being “content in all things.” My health issues keep me from knowing if I can do ANYTHING on a given day-----

But I do have some wonderful craft supplies that stay on my dining room table, waiting invitingly.

One day not long ago, I did get a tiny twig glued on a jar lid I'm making into an ornament. The next day, a couple of dabs of glue attached two pistachio nut shells I’d painted into ladybugs a few days before that. Today, maybe I'll get a teeninsy frond of Spanish moss dyed a brighter color (so it will show up better), and flattened somewhat, so its fragile ends can be glued to the ornament.

But if the work doesn't happen today, maybe next week. And if not at all, then I will have had the pleasure of dreaming about making art. And if I can dream of doing art, maybe I can even dream of a serious painting instead of just little dabblings. Maybe paint the line of a tree, the hint of a cloud, one day at a time? Thank you, Lord, for the ability to go on hoping my dreams may come true.

Note: I first wrote this as a comment on another person’s blog post. I see that it has a lot more to do with my own feelings than with the other one’s ponderings. I hope she won’t mind if post it here, as well.

I’ve also linked it to L. L. Barkat’s “On… Mondays.”

  1. The pleasure of dreaming is good too. I often do just that. :)

  2. I don't mind at all! I know very well how these things lead into each other. It's one of the most wonderful things about community--how we inspire each other to create.

I'm sorry about your struggle with chronic pain. Bless you, friend, for striving to live a life that honors our good God.

    And I love ladybugs. :)

  3. The artist just needs to create. The writer just needs to write. The dancer just needs to dance.

And yes, sometimes it will be for just an audience of One. and that's okay...
